Current events always provided Hergé with his most interesting themes. At the time, the press was giving extensive coverage to a ring of currency counterfeiters, and this provided the plot for The Black Island (1938). Tintin rushes to Scotland where he will confronts a gorilla which haunts a castle on a rocky island.
It is a mysterious airplane which sets Tintin, for the first time, on the trail of Doctor Müller for the first time. The latter runs a strange kind of mental asylum where those who enter are not necessarily deranged. In his pursuit of Müller, Tintin will end up on the Black Island where he will discover an even stranger activity…
